Proposed Session Description
To meet the aggressive carbon reduction goals of the region, projects of all types will need to shift to simple, efficient electric heat pump systems to reduce the fossil fuel use on site. The Passive House program includes strict load reduction and insulation targets for the building. However there also needs to be a shift to efficient all electric systems to serve these loads to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. We will focus on specific multifamily housing solutions for all electric mechanical systems. Particularly we will focus on hot water systems, including central air to water heat pumps, central VRF hot water plants, and distributed heat pump water heaters for multifamily applications. We will also focus on different energy recovery ventilation layouts and benefits, including considerations on when to keep the kitchen exhaust separately ducted, or tied through the ERV. There are also now several all in one packaged HVAC systems including energy recovery ventilation, and heating and cooling all in a single package without the need for outside condensers. We will review energy modeling results and operational feedback for these various types of systems to help inform early stage decision making around mechanical systems selection both for passive house certified projects, and other low carbon designs

Full Description
Simple is better, we need to get systems that work at scale and replace more well known fossil fuel based technologies.
