In a typical year, NESEA hosts more than 30 events across the Northeast. Through our in-person and online events, we continue to further our mission of cultivating a community where practitioners share, collaborate, and learn.
While most of the events listed here are open to any member of the NESEA community, some require an invitation and most require pre-registration.
Hanover, New Hampshire
Join us for a Pro Tour of the 55,000 SF Irving Institute for Energy and Society houses a newly created academic institute dedicated to the issues of energy and society.
Manchester, Massachusetts
Join us for a Pro Tour of New England’s first verified Net Zero public school. We will be learning about how the design team worked to reduce energy use and utility costs while creating modern, healthy learning spaces. Serving 400 students, the project transformed the school into an energy-efficient, flexible 21st-century environment. To achieve net zero energy, the project includes enhanced roof and wall insulation, optimized air barriers, applied efficient MEP systems, and strategic use of glazing.
South Portland, Maine
Join us for a tour of the new Mainspring Collective building in South Portland, Maine. Through a centralized and collaborative model incorporating many area social service partners, Mainspring offers a dignified, efficient and effective model of care that empowers individuals to navigate the pathway out of poverty. The goals for sustainability in this project include reducing carbon footprint of the non-profits housed in the center by moving to all electric power, with an estimated annual generation of 30,870kWh, keeping more than 30,283 lbs of carbon out of the atmosphere.

On September 17, the NESEA Board of Directors will be hosting an in-person meet-up for people working in industries connected to NESEA who have identities that are traditionally underrepresented in the field.
Revere, Massachusetts
Join us as we tour a former junkyard on the Revere waterfront that has been reinvented as Gibson Point; a 6-story, 291-unit all-electric development with many interesting architectural features.
New York City, New York
In autumn 2023, in just two weeks, Paul A. Castrucci Architects shipped and assembled 47 modular units from Leola, PA, to East Flatbush, Brooklyn. The result? A four-story residential complex with affordable, Passive House design. This innovative project aims to reduce energy use and embodied carbon, while embracing circular building design. This building is the first modular Passive House building in NYC.
BuildingEnergy Conference

NESEA's BuildingEnergy NYC conference and trade show is a chance to immerse yourself in a full day of networking and intensive learning with your peers from the fields of design, construction, engineering, policy, finance, and beyond. This unique event is designed by and for our community of practitioners, ensuring that the content is useful, relevant, and on the leading edge. Conference sessions present best practices and lessons learned based on real case studies and proven data, as well as showcasing innovative technologies and programs. Originally built in 1888 as two-story duplex apartments, and renovated in 2003, these untis are being redesigned and updated to achieve Passive House certification through a comprehensive Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) of the buildings' exterior envelopes. This project is intended to serve as a demo, showing the benefits of passive house guided retrofits that can be done with minimal resident disruption.
Boston, Massachusetts
Franklin Cummings Tech (FCT) is an exceptional case study of how sustainability, equity, and innovation intersect in the built environment. This new 68,000-square-foot campus in Roxbury’s Nubian Square embodies FCT’s mission of providing affordable technical education to a predominantly BIPOC and first-generation college student body, while also serving as a catalyst for community revitalization.
Waltham, Massachusetts
Join us for a tour of a 73,000 GSF, 3-story building featuring 68 units of affordable senior housing, including 66 one-bedroom apartments and 2 two-bedroom apartments. This building was designed with high-performance building materials and systems to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability.
Brooklyn, New York
This resilient new development, designed to address chronic social, economic, and health disparities in a historically underserved area of Brooklyn, is a 28-acre site will replace a decommissioned state psychiatric hospital with residential buildings, a public school, health clinic, and urban farm program.

BuildingEnergy Boston is a conference designed by and for practitioners in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. It brings more than 1,000 industry leaders and emerging professionals together to learn from and share ideas with each other. Sessions are curated by a volunteer NESEA-Member content committee to ensure that conference sessions are genuinely useful to attendees. The conference will feature product demonstrations, networking events, and accredited sessions that offer best practices and lessons learned, case studies and proven data, technical "how-to"s, emerging technologies, and innovative policies and programs.
