Hi, y'all!
Proposed Session Description
If Climate Justice is to yield substantive outcomes instead of mere slogans, practitioners must translate it into specific actions. Because policies governing the built environment have been instrumental in creating and sustaining institutionalized racism, the built environment field has a special responsibility to make climate justice a part of its standard processes thoroughly and quickly. We define Climate Justice as Climate justice is the principle that actions to mitigate or adapt to climate change should equitably distribute their benefits, redress existing inequities, and dismantle institutional racism and other systemic inequities. Reaching beyond the realm of DEI and modeled on the 1% of Art movement, the 10% for Climate Justice pledge asks buildings-sector firms (in design, engineering, energy services, and real estate) to dedicate 10% of their time and to grapple with why and how climate justice should become a core competency. Tamara Jones will present "How do we operationalize our values? Justice Principles in the Built Environment Sector" and Satpal Kaur will present "Develop a Beginner’s Mind" as prompts to participants to crowdsource the key questions to complete this statement: Resolved: That our practice should center Climate Justice by devoting 10% of our working time to studying, refining, and responding to the following questions...

Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Personally, I just think this is a very different framing than most approaches to "equity" have been, and i would like to see more people hear from Tamara and Satpal.

Full Description
We need to move from talking about diversity in hiring and move to a clear, industry-wide understanding of what having a core competency in climate justice means. We can only get there by having individual firms dedicate attention and time to figuring that out, just like we needed the innovation of many firms to get to a consensus on how to building tight and ventilate right.
