Proposed Session Description
This session is meant to challenge attendees to document and share the sustainability story of their projects. Not just the successes and achievements at the end of construction, but more importantly, the "why" and "how" of the sustainability story. Far too often Green Education is an afterthought with no line item(s) in the budget. It takes the form of building signage and/or web content left to be completed by the owner after the project is complete.
Smith College challenged this approach on their recent renovation to the Neilson Library, a building located in the heart of their campus, designed with the mission of advancing learning and discovery. They decided the most valuable information to share with students, staff, faculty and visitors of Neilson Library was not the final sustainability achievements, but instead the key decisions and conversations during design and construction that influenced those achievements. (The good, the bad and the ugly of those decisions.) Why? To share the story, inform future decision-making on campus, and inspire student research.
Smith College, Thornton Tomasetti and Shepley Bulfinch will share their multi-dimensional approach to reflection and sustainability storytelling on the Neilson Library renovation and will challenge attendees to create buildings that make people feel inspired by our industry and driven to make transformational change in their own lives.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The case study features Smith College, an all women's college. Two key aspects of the sustainability story for the Neilson Library included equity of access and prioritizing women & minorities in the workforce. Additionally, the library’s pioneering approach to the elimination of Red List chemicals has served as an impetus for positive market transformation around materials in the building industry and placed a lens on the environmental and social justice issues which most noticeably impact women and BIPOC.
Learning Objectives
Learn new tactics and strategies for documenting the sustainability outcomes of a project.
Understand the effectiveness of storytelling as it relates to influencing, teaching and inspiring building occupants.
Develop a plan for implementing a multi-dimensional approach to reflection and storytelling on your own project.
Discuss potential project barriers and tactics to overcome them.
Has this session been presented before?

Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
The Neilson Library, which will be used as a case study in this session, represents a collective approach to a complex issue. The project engaged over 1,900 Smith community members and dozens of expert consultants in its planning process, and as a result, the project embodies the trifecta of deep research, expertise and community engagement.

Full Description
Our buildings serve as teaching tools whether we've designed them that way or not. The question is, what is it that we want to be teaching? This session focuses on the importance of reflection and storytelling. Telling the sustainability story of a building can be one of the most powerful ways to influence, teach and inspire occupants. Our goal is to challenge attendees to expand their approach to educational initiatives by conveying the history, culture and values of a project that unite people and inspire transformational change.
