Arnold Sapenter is a high energy organizational consultant with over 30 years of professional experience in cultural diversity, environmental planning and sustainability program development as well as, organization training, project development and management. He is an adept communicator and analytical thinker with proven ability to develop and lead cross-functional teams. . After retiring from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Director of Sustainability and previously serving as the Director of Diversity and Program Monitoring; Arnold decided to use his program development, project management, training skills and experience to assist business, and non-profit organizations in achieving their missions and strategic goals related to cultural diversity, social justice and environmental sustainability.
Proposed Session Description
COVID 19 highlighted the health, education, environmental and economic disparities that exist between communities of color and majority white communities in the United Sates. It was widely observed throughout the country that preexisting health conditions and limited access to health care and clean environmental resources were major factors in communities of color when compared to predominantly white communities in the United States. This workshop will explore the challenges created by environmental disparities and will highlight the importance of including cultural diversity in current discussions of environmental sustainability.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The proposed workshop session is focused on diversity, equity and inclusion issues and the connection to environmental sustainability and building design.
Learning Objectives
-Attendees will be able to understand and discuss issues of cultural diversity as they relate to environmental sustainability and building design.
-Attendees will gain a better knowledge of how to include cultural diversity considerations into the LEED planning and design process.
-Attendees will gain an increased understanding of how building design policies must be changed to support more culturally inclusive design.
-Attendees will gain a knowledge of the metrics that can be used to enhance building design while addressing issues related to cultural diversity.

Presentation followed by facilitated discussion or breakout groups
Session Format Details
A formal presentation with Powerpoint Slides will be followed by discussion of specific problems of diversity and sustainability in small breakout groups and a final large group feedback session.
