Proposer Additional Info
Brienne McKinley is an emerging professional in the field of Mechanical Engineering for High Performance Building Systems.
Proposed Session Description
In 2021 NV5 performed a net-zero analysis of a commercial, hotel, and residential (96 building) campus totaling ~646,800 ft2 of buildings in operation. The analysis resulted in energy conservation measures (ECMs) totaling an estimated 19 million pounds of CO2 reduction in carbon emissions. These measures have all been accepted by the client and are in-progress with funding. The measures proposed include a solar array sized to meet an annual production target of 6,400 MWh and a 1,200 ton geothermal system. This session is intended to use the analysis done by the project team to help guide the audience through the design process – including balancing consideration for electrification, energy efficiency and renewable energy generation measures while also considering sustainability in a way that isn’t directly centered on carbon emissions.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
For the speaker panel: Our speaker panel is diverse in terms of gender and one of the speakers is an emerging professional. For the client: Client is engaging veteran, women, and minority-owned businesses and companies to become part of the project team.

Full Description
In order to meet 2030 carbon emissions reductions goals, today’s project teams need to implement significant changes in both renewable energy production, while also targeting a list of energy savings projects in every building project we touch. Net Zero retrofit projects pose their own unique multivariable and multidisciplinary challenges, not to mention the problems that come with trying to achieve both sustainability and net zero in one project. This session will help professionals in all areas connected to building design and management (owner, engineer, facility operations, building occupant) think through some of these problems.
