This session will present the reasons the building industry should be going all-in on green roofs for our building projects. Green roofs can expand programmatic space without increasing the gross square footage. They provide connections to nature in areas that are lacking in easily accessible green space. Vegetation on a building’s roof improves building performance, contributes to storm water management, restores habitat, and offers another great space for hands-on learning by students and faculty. Even though they are desired by many – especially designers – it is a challenge to keep them in many of our projects or to prevent them from becoming a token representation of the original vision. We plan to share our experiences, which we hope represents a trend to increase the use of green vegetated roofs in our built environment. There will be an ongoing demand for more people to learn how to design, install, and maintain these systems as we add green roofs to our projects and municipalities continue to consider and implement requirements to include them. It can offer opportunities for those in urban environments to explore careers that address climate change and allow for greater connections with nature and the outdoors.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our panel is equally split between men and women. The two architects work for a women-owned business whose work is often located in municipalities and for members of their communities who face economic justice issues. The green roof specialist has worked with clients who are either addressing economic justice issues directly or indirectly - often by helping develop rooftop urban farms, which will also be discussed in the session.
Learning Objectives
Evaluate the pros and cons of integrating a vegetated green roof on a building project.
Identify the different types of vegetated roof systems that are available and the reasons to choose one over another.
Attendees will discover the potential green roofs offer as aesthetically pleasing didactic features of a building.
Identify examples of municipalities that consider green roofs an important tool in the arsenal for sustainable development.

Presentation followed by facilitated discussion or breakout groups
Session Format Details
The panelists will present case studies of projects with green roofs - both by them and others - with a portion including anecdotes of how these spaces are used by occupants. The presentation would be about 45 to 60-minutes. One of the architects will serve as a moderator during the Q&A session after the presentation. Interaction between the panelists and the audience will be encouraged during the presentation. We will also consider other activities that would be conducive to having the audience break-out into smaller groups.

Our panel includes: two architects who will speak about the programmatic, cost, and performance aspects of green roofs; a green roofing expert who's company is involved with designing, installing, and maintaining green roofs; and an environmental science educator at one of the facilities HMFH designed that includes multiple types of green roof systems with the intent to use them as educational tools.

Green, vegetated roofs touch on many of the categories we strive to incorporate in projects to improve their climate impacts, which include: building energy performance, building material durability, biophilia, social and economic equity (relative to new business opportunities, heat island impacts on urban areas, etc.), climate change mitigation, etc.
