Boston 2022 Areas of Focus

Proposer Job Title
Director of Sustainable Design
Proposed Session Description
Podium-style multifamily construction is ubiquitous across Greater Boston. Comprising several stories of wood framing over a concrete or steel base, this construction approach is a cost effective way to provide increased density on an urban site, often with parking or other unconditioned space in some or all of the podium. This configuration, however, poses challenges to achieving thermal-bridge free design to meet Passive House and other high performance building envelope standards. This presentation will explore ways to integrate air and thermal control strategies when designing multifamily podium buildings. The session will begin with background information on this construction type and will highlight challenge areas commonly encountered. The presenters will share a toolkit of various approaches for overcoming these challenges, starting with early design decisions and weighing the pros and cons according to factors such as performance, constructability, and cost. Structural considerations for incorporating thermal breaks will be discussed, and various case studies of built and on-the-boards projects will illustrate these approaches. The session will close with a question and answer period and follow-up discussion.

Comments about your speaker roster
We are finalizing our speaker roster. We have discussed our session with Ben Rosenberg at Silman, who has indicated that he or two other colleagues from Silman would be able to provide an engaging portion of the session-- this will be finalized should we be selected.

Full Description
This session will uncover important considerations and strategies for an extremely prevalent building condition (conditioned space over parking and mixed use) that is often overlooked or treated as an afterthought. Project teams can benefit from a detailed look at this specific and challenging envelope condition, even if their project isn’t pursuing Passive House Certification. Attendees will walk away from this session with a toolkit of approaches and a grasp of the multiple considerations to balance when designing podium structures.
