Proposed Session Description
Our cities are inextricably linked to our natural world. It is imperative that we build and expand our urban areas in a way that works in harmony with nature. Let us unify our approach to design, planning and development in a way that recognizes the social, environmental, and economic value of living architecture to make our cities more resilient to climate change. Living Architecture in the form of Green Roofs and Living Walls are creative solutions in combating the climate crisis while beautifying cities simultaneously. Specifically in underserved neighborhoods where community members are more vulnerable to high temperatures, extreme flooding, and air pollution. They offer a myriad of benefits such as; air purification, reduction of urban heat island effect, stormwater management, habitat restoration, food production, boosted immunity, health and wellness, muffling of noise pollution and much more.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Living Architecture can be an essential tool to mitigating the disproportionate effects of climate change in underserved communities; as well as reduce energy costs, improve health and wellbeing, and lower crime rates.
Learning Objectives
Identify and quantify the social, environmental and economic benefits of exterior Living Walls in urban areas
Identify and quantify the social, environmental and economic benefits of Green Roofs in urban areas

Full Description
Currently, greenery is seen as a luxurious amenity or an optional add-on rather than an integral part of our built environments. However, our populations are only growing while our resources and ecosystem services are depleting. In order to foster change we need to first disseminate information associated with the design approach and benefits of the green building technology available to us today. The audience will be apart of a unique conversation focused on design, implementation, challenges, and inclusion that come with Green Roofs and Living Walls.
