Proposed Session Description
How do we design buildings for an uncertain climate? Climate is changing at different rates across the globe and general inaccessibility of historical weather data means that many designers are still designing buildings based on outdated weather files for climate that no longer exists. For example, many EPW weather files used for EnergyPlus building simulations don't include data from the last two decades despite record-breaking weather seen year after year. In this session, we present current challenges and show the risks presented by climate change to building designers and what tools designers can use to access weather data from the latest advancements in meteorological and climate science.
Learning Objectives
Recognize the challenges of designing buildings with decades of design life given the uncertainties about future climate.
Discover and learn about the latest available data from climate and meteorological science applicable to building design.
Identify challenges and potential problems of relying on weather station data.
Learn about retrofit opportunities and risks presented by climate change.

Full Description
Building envelopes are designed assuming prevailing climate conditions of the region, often looking many decades into the future. Changing climate brings design uncertainties and many architects are still designing buildings with outdated weather data.
