Proposed Session Description
One key element of technology that is often overlooked is data. In this case, specifically whole building consumption data, particularly for multitenant buildings. Historically, utilities only consider accounts and meters, and as a result getting whole building data into the hands of marketplace contributors (like this audience!) remains a challenge. This session will explore this problem, the myriad of use cases affected by it, and best practices for utilities providing this data. These use cases include benchmarking and meeting BEPS requirements as well as segmentation and targeting of opportunities across the city landscape.
Why is this session important?
How do we enable buildings to become grid enabled buildings if we don’t have accurate ongoing consumption data? And if the organizations on the other side of the grid don’t recognize them? We continue to talk of Grid Enabled Buildings, advanced controls, etc. However, historical, and ongoing whole building consumption is rarely mentioned.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Behind the meter instrumentation is potentially feasible in today’s market for the largest, most sophisticated buildings. However, how do we provide insight into, and stimulate action on, the less privileged building managed by less well-known and funded operators? Until baseline data is accessible for all buildings, the landscape of work done on buildings is shaped by who can afford to get their hands on their own consumption data. We need to lower those barriers at scale to truly enable equitable work across this sector. See https://www.nexuslabs.online/why-do-only-13-of-small-buildings-have-controls/ for additional information on untouched buildings, and https://calicoenergy.com/2021/11/02/extending-dei-to-energy-equity-and-energy-efficiency-in-buildings/ for a synthesized discussion of how this is an equity issue.
