Proposed Session Description
In this presentation, I will describe in detail the approach used by Passive House teams to easily and repeatedly implement Passive House. Reducing the energy load and carbon output of the built environment is imperative to addressing the climate crisis, and Passive House provides the tools necessary to make this happen. Both through the experience of our projects and those throughout North America, there is a pattern that successful Passive House teams follow, regardless of project size or type. This systematic approach allows Passive House building to become scalable at the level needed to address climate change without sacrificing quality.
Why is this session important?
As a Passive House professional, understanding how to build a Passive House is only the first step in shifting building trends towards high-performance construction. Understanding the skills to make the process scalable is the key ingredient to reaching current climate goals.

Yes - this proposal addresses the Skill Gap. We should encourage Michael to address the work he does to bring contractors together to share knowledge.

Maybe (leaning yes) - I would like to see other panelists be included. Contractor/engineer/owner who have gone through the PH certification.

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Mon, 05/09/2022 - 11:56 am

Round 1 Discussion:Questions for reviewer to ask: 1. Can another panelist be added, someone other than an architect, preferably a contractor. 2. Would Mike be willing to highlight team approach for construction process. Firm gets together the contractors to share information, addressing the skill gap. Intially the meeting were met with push back, now those involved see value in meeting. Although meetings weren't mentioned in the proposal, curator would need to encourge Mike to discuss the team approach.

Goal: scalability and implementation in passive house retrofits in dense urban areasCase study: contractor new to Passive House, how they applied their approach to working with a new contractor, how this can be scalable beyond individual small scale workHow to scale in NY:Contractors: details, materials, products, sequencingWhat the contractors doHow they like to do itWhat steps made senseOwners:What are we doing now with owners they we weren’t doing before – focus on occupancyGetting people to want to do itCan add speakersKevin Brennan, because he’s implementing air sealingAndrew Fishman – contractor who can speak to the differences between conventional and Passive House (doing 2 Passive Houses with Baxt Ingui now)

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Fri, 06/03/2022 - 8:48 am

R2 Discussion:A first glance very general, but actually focused. Want to talk about how to expand the reach of passive house projects by learning how to communicate to house owners, make it more enticing. Works with Contractors to get them excited about Passive House. Gets team together so they can share ideas and best practices. He could bring in a contractor to speak. Has one in mind. Would be great to have a general contractor talk about what they learned and how they now are converts. Good speaker and new and different perspective. Is it new construciton or retrofit. Case studies may retrofit. Question: Can this fit into 130? Answer: Not similiar enough in subject area. Questions, Concerns, Suggestions: Be sure to have contractor as a speaker for their perspective. Lots of support for this session.

Learning Objectives
