Proposed Session Description
The New England states have adopted beneficial electrification as the primary strategy to achieve deep economywide cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. While recent state legislation across the region has codified these reduction targets in statute, these bills have had a clear lack of funding to address the massive capital investment need to electrify building energy systems. The tide may now be turning on this front in Massachusetts. 2022 saw the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the completion of the Commission on Clean Heat’s work, and the implementation of significant electrification incentives under Massachusetts' new energy efficiency triennial plan. Building owners should understand how to leverage and maximize these incentives.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Bridging the funding gap for building electrification is especially important for low-income customers. Enabling building owners serving disadvantaged communities to maximize incentive opportunities is necessary to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in realizing New England's beneficial electrification goals.
Learning Objectives
Understand current state and federal incentives available for electrifying building heating and cooling systems.
Understand what has changed for building electrification incentives over the last 12 months.
Understand where to start if someone wants to evaluate and/or pursue these incentive opportunities.
Understand why beneficial electrification is needed to meet New England's greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.
