Proposed Session Description
The NEEP team will assign participants to one of four stakeholder roles (city staff, building owners, affordable housing advocates, and contractors) and these groups will gather to define their needs, concerns, and motivations. Participants will then convene into 1-3 groups and discuss a proposed building performance standard, working together to resolve their different and conflicting priorities.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Equity is central to this session’s purpose. By having participants think through the wants and needs of different groups, they will grapple with the importance of involving diverse stakeholders from the beginning. Discussing a specific policy in groups will help participants improve their ability to advocate for their needs and make compromises that best serve everyone involved.
Learning Objectives
Consider different perspectives to inform consensus
Incorporate equity into decision making
Critically analyze building performance standards
Learn the value of early and thorough community engagement
Has this session been presented before?
Yes
When and Where?
The NEEP team facilitated a version of this session at Building Energy NYC and Building Energy Boston 2022, but it has been adapted and refined for this proposal. The adjustments make it so that each participant has more time to think through their new role/perspective, so that they can better step into the character for the discussion. We will also discuss a specific, real-world policy, rather than having the group develop a band new policy/program from a theoretical jurisdiction.

Full Description
Many different stakeholder groups must be engaged in the community planning process to create policies and programs that achieve their goals in meaningful and equitable ways. It is critical to be able to balance different values and objectives. This session is important because it will help attendees improve their ability to think from other perspectives, have difficult conversations, and come to consensus in an equitable manner. The session directly addresses the first conference interest area of People.
