Proposed Session Description
Join in the discussion of how Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and Abode Energy Management (Abode) piloted and refined a protocol for a scalable home decarbonization assessment that provides a customized plan for homeowners to eliminate the use of fossil fuels over time. To create a scalable approach, the pilot considered what tradeoffs need to be made to balance cost, time in the home, testing, and modeling. The pilot also tested approaches to providing targeted support at the time customers are ready to act. The session will include a discussion from a panel of those involved in the pilot, including a homeowner, discussing data and lessons learned from the first round of the pilot and proposed changes for the net round.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The pilot itself focused o equity in both the incentive structure and the participant makeup. We will incorporate both of these topics into the presentation and discussion.
Learning Objectives
1. Understand the technical goals and challenges in a home decarbonization assessment.
2. Think through the tradeoffs that need to be made from a policymaker’s or program administrator’s perspective to scale a residential decarbonization assessment model.
3. Identify the cost-effective and impactful strategies for providing homeowners with useful and timely decarbonization guidance.
4. Incorporate decarbonization into existing models and business plans.

Full Description
The Decarbonization Pathways pilot is one of few pilots of this kind across the nation. This pilot will hopefully offer valuable lessons as policymakers in Massachusetts, the region, and the nation look to scale residential decarbonization. Industry stakeholders of all kinds can better understand the opportunity and barriers to scaling residential decarbonization measures, incorporating decarbonization into existing programs, and providing equity in program design.
