Proposed Session Description
HVAC system components contribute more to the outcome of a construction project than ever before. For decades, HVAC system components have been specified for the benefit of occupants, to provide air for breathing, and to manage comfort. In the past decade, projects have increasingly required stringent new energy-recovery rates, electrical consumption limits, and ventilation strategies, for the benefit of the planet, to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. This session will discuss green building certification programs and how HVAC system components can influence the building carbon lifecycle and minimize occupant exposure to hazardous product ingredients.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Yes. To satisfy the first learning objective, the session will include evidence of disparities across the spectrum of building typologies and locations.
Learning Objectives
Communicate the need for buildings that are healthier for people and for the planet
Identify green building certification programs that emphasize occupant and environmental health
List HVAC System components that benefit people and the planet by contributing to green building certification programs

Full Description
This session describes an emerging area of sustainable building practices, that impacts the people and the planet. Green building strategies are often set aside due to lack of understanding about the program requirements and the availability of green building products that help satisfy the program requirements. The session is intended to increase the comfort level of specifiers considering green building certification.
