Proposed Session Description
Vermont affordable multifamily housing developers have a long history of building high performance buildings with an exceptional envelope and Passivehouse air tightness. This results in buildings that need high quality mechanical ventilation and small electrified heating systems. These Vermont developers have installed a variety of systems including central and distributed (one per unit or one per floor) HVAC. Looking back at the data, what conclusions can we draw as to which may be ideal? Learn what systems are shaking out to have the best balance of first cost, lowest operating cost, and ease of installation and maintenance over the life of the equipment.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Low income renters often don't get to choose buildings with high quality ventilation and fossil fuel free heating systems. This session will focus on how developers can work to identify a system that is lower operating cost, lower first cost, and lower maintenance for affordable housing.
Learning Objectives
Identify at least two mechanical systems for multifamily housing that are fossil fuel free and provide good ventilation for tenants.
Describe to colleagues the associated losses from central mechanical systems.
Utilize the information shared to make informed decisions about future mechanical system selection.
Differentiate between what is meant by central and distributed mechanicals in a building.

Session Format Details
I would be happy to pair up with another efficiency group or developer to get their perspective on the electrification of MF HVAC or just have the audience provide feedback on systems they like. Otherwise I was thinking I would do 45-50 min of talking and then Q&A
Recommended Length
60-minute session

Full Description
The need for affordable housing is an issue all over the country. The desire to get off fossil fuels and electrify heating systems is something we are all trying to achieve. Vermont affordable housing developers have installed different types of heating, cooling and ventilation systems and have data on their performance and operating costs. The goal is to share this information with others developers such that they can make informed decisions about mechanical system selection. If developers could identifying one or two systems that work for the majority of housing being built in their area, they may be able to shorten design time, reduce design costs and system installation time on the job site. The final result is an increase in the overall number of units built per year with zero fossil fuels for heating and hot water and the installation of high quality ventilation.
