Proposed Session Description
Building by building sustainability efforts in new construction to reach net zero energy, waste, water and human impact is necessary to help mitigate the impacts of climate change and build a sustainable future. However, 75% of buildings that will be here in 50 years already exists. Greening our existing buildings to the same standards is even more challenging but the embodied energy of these buildings and communities makes it a worthwhile and necessary focus. A portfolio, campus or regional approach is needed to help create a culture of sustainability. This session will use case studies from micro to maco scale, demonstrating net zero planning, implementation and impacts across broad market sectors from Green Building Center's SME team.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
affordable housing, at risk communities, urban redevelopment zones, and diversity in stakeholders are all touched on in this presentation and demonstrated by the case studies
Learning Objectives
Define the key strategies and approaches to achieve net zero energy, waste, water and human impact results
Understand the process and elements of carbon neutrality and net zero planning.

Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Embodied energy of existing communities and its true impact in new construction are often under estimated or ignored. Reducing energy use is one way to impact this, but waste, water and human impact reduction also affects our carbon emissions and footprint substantially. We will attempt to connect all these dots as part of this presentation.

Full Description
People — Building consensus around the importance, urgency, and feasibility of sustainable building practices is important to reach our sustainability goals embodied in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Using the building as a teaching tool, developing net zero energy, waste, water and human impact projects that lead by example, and working on the large scale of carbon neutrality master planning, WELL Building Portfolio certification and LEED for Campus certification expands the reach for both people and planet.
Buildings — We need to significantly increase the number of buildings the meet climate goals in the short time frame remaining considered to be within a safe window, while not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Planning to achieve net zero energy, waste, water and human impact results as well as taking a portfolio or campus approach to deploying sustainability strategies is an effective way to accomplish this.
Training — Passing on knowledge and lessons learned is critical to building the sustainable leaders of tomorrow. Leveraging buildings as teaching tools, professional accreditations like LEED, WELL and TRUE Advisor as well as integrating sustainable education into primary and secondary education programs, including vocational training is necessary. Our team will discuss these approaches and provide case studies of programs developed and impacts.
