Boston 2023 Areas of Focus
Proposed Session Description
The session will discuss the decarbonization strategy followed to achieve the Zero Carbon Building certification for a mixed-use residential building for students in extreme cold climate for designing a decentralized ground source heat pump system for space conditioning, eliminate use of natural gas domestic for hot water production and utilize low Global Warming Potential (GWP) carbon dioxide refrigerant heat pumps. The session will show the parametric systems analysis conducted to finalize the optimized system decision matrix and compare the merits and demerits of different options analyzed from an energy, capital cost and maintenance perspective for building owners and management.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
It provides an equitable case for different design options considered in high performance mechanical systems design.
Learning Objectives
Learn what parameters to keep in mind while designing an all electric domestic hot water system for multi family buildings.
Learn the limitations of ground source heat pumps in cold weather conditions and its impact on the annual balance of the field
Learn how to design a low GWP heat pump system and the design constraints for such systems
Learn how to analyze different system types by utilizing a parametric analysis approach on multiple variable parameters involved

Full Description
This session is extremely important because natural gas is still the primary source of energy to produce domestic hot water in multi unit residential buildings and this presentation will provide an alternate solution for building owners and present a business case for utilizing heat pump technology for both space conditioning and domestic hot water production even in colder climates.
