Proposed Session Description
We all have experience in the workplace when we hear statements, jokes, cracks, and questions that make us cringe, but we may not have the skills to respond constructively in the moment. This session will bring knowledgeable JEDI professionals to work with us. Some fundamentals will be presented (e.g., intent vs. impact; recognizing our own biases; recognizing micro-aggressions) and then most of the session will focus on learning skill from real examples from job sites and office environments. In order to scale our work, we must improve workforce development, and inclusion and retention of people from marginalized identities will be a critical tool in our toolbox.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
That is the main focus of our session, to provide tools and strategies to promote greater workplace inclusion for all.
Learning Objectives
Recognize types of micro-aggressions and disparaging speech
Describe how lack of hurtful intention by the speaker may still be hurtful to someone
Intervene with thoughtful, non-escalating questions that effectively cause positive change
Recognize their own unconscious biases and micro-aggressions and learn to be more supportive to marginalized people in the workplace
Has this session been presented before?

Comments about your speaker roster
Please go to minute 32 for Diana's sample presentation in the video. We are still confirming our final speakers, but we have some strong possibilities and feel confident we will settle on a good facilitation team and presenters.

Full Description
A truly diverse, equitable and inclusive design and construction industry is a critical element to us scaling our work. This requires us to create workplaces that are welcoming and comfortable to all. Many of us don’t have the skills that we can use to constructively address micro-aggressions directed towards under-represented marginalized co-workers.
