Proposed Session Description
We invite you to an interactive session on financing strategies for preparing New York’s affordable housing to meet the climate goals of New York State and New York City. Presenters will share insights from Sustainable Affordable Housing, a recently published white paper by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and present an affordable housing finance model that demonstrates the need for innovative financial tools and incentives to drive early adoption.
Why is this session important?
How do we finance the transition to a clean energy economy, particularly in affordable housing where cash flow is limited? Get in the head of a multifamily affordable housing owner wrestling with how to pay for different decarbonization options, and explore the pros and cons of different capital sources. Explore the levers that exist at the property-level to pay for decarbonization and ensure compliance with local laws (ex. LL97).
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Speaker roster is two women and one man. The focus of our presentation is on ensuring an equitable and inclusive transition to a clean energy economy, focusing on affordable housing.
Learning Objectives
Better understand affordable housing finance, and the opportunities and challenges of making deep green improvements at properties.
Understand the pros and cons of different capital sources available to pay for decarbonization, and new sources of capital that can be "created" at the building-level.
Has this session been presented before?
Yes
When and Where?
Yes, but differently. The main concepts and the model were presented as part of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, NYSERDA, and CPC's launch of "Sustainable Affordable Housing" whitepaper (published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in early 2023), however the focus of this presentation would be more on the model, which was only a feature of the previous presentations.
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 1 - No prior knowledge needed.

Comments about your speaker roster
While a couple are not yet confirmed, I am confident they will be amenable given our collaboration on the white paper and shared goals.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
We presented the model in a few invite-only webinars and received very positive feedback. It resonated with non-finance people and helped shed light on the unique opportunities and challenges associated with transitioning affordable housing to all-electric.
