Proposed Session Description
Decarbonizing the building industry will be a long process that will require the hard work of both the current and future generations. Bridging the gap between industry leaders with decades of experience and freshly graduated Gen Z’ers is an important challenge that our industry needs to focus on to make sure that the solutions for the future are started to being designed today. This presentation will focus on how to use emerging technologies like coding and AI to bridge this generational gap.
Why is this session important?
This session is important because it brings to the table a challenge that not many stakeholders within the building industry are currently thinking about. Decarbonizing the current and future portfolio of buildings in a city like New York will require thinking outside of the box, looking at technologies that might not yet have been discovered, and creating building system solutions that go beyond what we would nowadays consider state-of-the-art technologies. This is why it is important to continue to encourage young talented people to join the building design industry in order to gather new perspectives and take advantage of emerging technologies. In times in which large tech companies like Amazon and Google are focusing their effort to capture and retain this young talent, the competition for recently graduated architects, engineers, and other STEM related careers has become tough and even expensive. This session will walk through the process of how to motivate recent college graduates to join the building industry by providing them with an inclusive environment that will encourage them to succeed in an industry that has been historically very homogenous.
While motivating the future generation is important, involving the current industry leaders and taking advantage of their experience and their knowledge is equally as important as well. While members of the Generation X are the most prevalent decision makers within our industry, it is important to pass along their knowledge so that the leaders of the future can also make important decisions wisely. Bridging this generational gap, however, can be a tough process that many companies might struggle with to put into practice. This session will also walk through effective methods on how to improve inter-generational communication by using emerging technologies including recently developed corporate software and AI. The overall goal will be to prove that it is possible to retain and take advantage of the experience of the older generations while making good use of the new technologies and ideas that the new generations bring onto the table.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are extremely important when it comes to motivating the future generations. Millennials and Gen Z'ers are very aware of the need to promote these topics within the workforce, and this presentation will go over how to do so effectively, in order to create a work environment that attracts the most talented people. Andrew Kozak, as a Principal and head of the Mechanical and Energy departments at BR+A has done an excellent job at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion since joining the firm, by hiring people from diverse backgrounds and creating an environment where they all feel comfortable. Joaquin Font, as an immigrant from Latin America, was one of the people Andrew brought into the team to promote diversity. He has since pushed to continue to make BR+A an inclusive company in which everyone feels welcome and can safely be themselves.
