Proposed Session Description
The path of netzero carbon has to be carefully accessed specially if we are laying out the roadmap for a state college campus with historic buildings and old infrastructure. Through this session we will talk about preparing a Net Zero Carbon road mapping campus master plan. We will discuss the three prong approach used to discover, analyze, and strategize at building operations level, district level, policy level and more.
Why is this session important?
The big problem this session address is not only how to prepare for decarbonization for a multi building campus, but also one which has historic buildings and is state owned. This is very impactful as you are trying to bring change at campus level and setting an example for other campuses to follow.

YES/MAYBE - While I agree that the focus on a college campus might be limiting, I feel there may be some important lessons to learn from the interaction between Owner and Designer when planning for large scale decarbonization. Their proposal is a little vague and doesn't include much information, so in order for me to give an absolute yes, I would need to hear more about it. I think the concept of the session is in the right place.

Kristy O'Hagan Fri, 05/19/2023 - 11:25 am

Yes. College campuses around the state are developing NZ roadmaps/guidelines. Important to hear how U Albany is addressing the complexity of decarbonizing a campus.

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Thu, 05/25/2023 - 10:57 am

Round 1 discussion: - This could be a great resource for other campus projects- Based on one campus but they hope to implement it across other campuses- Deals with historic preservation and other state entities

Monisha Royan Wed, 06/14/2023 - 12:27 am

Round 2: Yes; This session will showcase three building typologies on campus as case studies - a science building, a residential, and an academic building. The buildings focus on historic retrofit. The proposer (the architect) would set up a panel discussion with the energy consultant and owner to discuss their integrative design process. The session will address the following: Walk-through the integrative process (Owner, Architect, Energy consultant) during the design development and construction stage?Defining the base case scenarios? What is the ideal energy-efficient solution?Walk-through of the iterative process to optimize the cost-effective energy-efficient solutionHow can this process set a precedent or an example for historic/campus retrofit?

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Thu, 06/22/2023 - 1:52 pm

R2 meeting: Owner, architect, and energy consultant perspective. Different building types + historic. Not yet retrofitted to Net Zero, focus on integrated process.
