Proposed Session Description
Presenting lessons learned (including designs) from a SWA/NYSERDA pilot to decarbonize MF DHW in key ways: 1, Bring in community-based partners to recruit sites and develop savings-sharing with residents. 2, Create designs featuring low-cost HPWH deployment. Displacement strategies require less design work, controls, and capital. 3, Train contractors in application of the technology. 4, Share findings, design templates, lessons learned, etc. to fuel scaling a design-build approach.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our project is being executed in affordable housing only, and includes a subcontractor who is devoted to working with residents and developing a framework for sharing savings with residents who do not have ownership of their multifamily dwellings.
Learning Objectives
1. Identify opportunities for sharing project savings with residents in rental properties.
2. Understand how a heat pump can be tied into an existing DHW plant for displacement strategies.
3. Apply the concepts of payback calculations to displacement strategies.
4. Understand how displacement strategy approaches support contractor-led scaling of decarbonization work.

Full Description
The featured project aims to bring decarbonization strategies to a challenging market.
We see a lot of cash-constrained clients right now-- interest rates are high, affordable housing has seen lots of decreased rent collection since the start of the pandemic, etc.. Electricity rates are high and gas is cheap, and incentive programs can be very difficult to navigate. But we also see a lot of interest in decarbonization.
We found a pathway forward through these challenges, but it was not easy, and we have a lot of lessons learned to share. We want to help others avoid those issues and to introduce a design approach that we do not see featured in other case studies.
