Proposed Session Description
Existing housing represents an enormous amount of “up front” carbon that has already been committed. The more we can re-use it, the less carbon we are releasing per unit of housing. We will look at low-carbon solutions to improving efficiency, and identify some of the most carbon intensive assemblies to replace.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Older rentals in the Northeast often have lead paint, poor air quality, and other harmful contents. Renovations provide a way to remediate that
Learning Objectives
identify opportunities for improvement in existing buildings
identify common dangers and where to look for them in existing buildings
Develop a hierarchy of project goals
identify possibilities for monitoring pre- and post-construction

Full Description
The challenges of low-carbon new construction have mostly been met, in theory if not in practice. Renovations are far more challenging, and fewer hard and fast rules can be applied. Can we come up with widely applicable guidelines?
