Proposed Session Description
Would you build your car in your driveway? Sounds crazy right? Weather is getting extreme - seasons are getting longer and shorter. Our buildings, and the people who work on them, deserve to be sheltered while work is underway. Good pre-fabricated housing controls the working climate, shortens the framing and trades timelines, lessens waste, protects building materials, pre-plans for the inevitable, and can be replicated at scale. With scale, comes capacity for impact.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Modular Construction is one of the few level-playing fields in the construction world - where the product produced by a factory can be slated for any segment of the socio-economic strata.
Learning Objectives
Ability to troubleshoot design solutions that best align with manufacturing.
Be conversant in both the constraints and advantages of modular building.
Clarify and define scope responsibilities between manufacturers and on-site contractors, for the purposes of estimating, planning, and purchasing.
Understanding of the unknowns - and the ability to frame the potential pitfalls and contingencies for a given project.

Comments about your speaker roster
Builders and representatives from the modular manufacturers with whom we work have previously been very enthusiastic about presenting with us on similar topics, and we're very confident that, should the session be accepted, we will find partners for co-presenting on their relevant portions of the case studies and topics outlined here.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
The panel of industry colleagues intends to tell the story of the potency and potential of modular construction through the lens of multiple case studies and lessons learned, including: The case of convincing the modular world to build high performance - lessons learned with KBS; The case of Zip Sheathing and flangeless windows - lessons learned about products that work best on an assembly line; The case of scope confusion - educating builders on how-to estimate, manage, anticipate; The case of a sinking module - lessons learned for pre-planning for events that are bound to happen; The case of a complex, 3500 sf home - lesson learned about what makes sense for design and why we should be designing simple buildings; The case of modular as a model for scalable impact. We also aim to address these questions: What are designers' barriers to adoption? What are builders' barriers to adoption? What are trades' barriers to adoption? What are modular manufacturers' barriers to adoption?

Full Description
The session is important because building for climate resilience won't be possible or effective if we don't specifically seek scalable solutions. Continuing to explore manufacturing and production-based solutions to new construction will be critical in the effort to improve-upon or replace building stock with resilient, well-sourced, low-embodied carbon building stock.
