Proposed Session Description
Learn how practitioners can use the technique of behavioral journey mapping to improve uptake of home energy programs. First, explore case studies where practitioners built maps of how residents move through the program uptake process, identified barriers and enablers that residents (especially vulnerable populations) face, and identified specific solutions. Then, apply the technique yourself to a current program challenge in an interactive session.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session centers equity. Behavioral journey mapping is an essential tool to understand and address the unique barriers that vulnerable populations face to accessing decarbonization programs. In our session, we will present one case study explicitly focused on mapping vulnerable populations’ barriers to accessing clean energy technologies.
Learning Objectives
Recognize when behavioral journey mapping could improve program design and uptake
Create a simple behavioral journey map
Identify the barriers and enablers that impact program uptake among different populations
Apply publicly available online tools to assist in behavioral journey mapping

Additional Comments
One of the case studies that we plan to present have been presented before: Using Behavioral Insights to Reduce Energy Burden and Increase Community Trust (presented at Behavior, Energy, & Climate Change 2022)
The other case study has not been presented: How can we encourage adoption of home energy efficiency measures? Link: https://www.bi.team/blogs/how-can-we-encourage-adoption-of-home-energy-efficiency-measures/
This interactive session is a unique concept that we have not presented before.

Comments about your speaker roster
We are in the process of confirming a co-facilitator for the interactive portion of the session who can provide a real-world case study for participants to work on. Our first choice is one of our contacts at the City of Boston, and we have nonprofit partners that may also be a good fit. We also welcome suggestions from the Committee.

Full Description
This session is important right now because each state has been tasked with designing a program to provide rebates to low-income residents who upgrade their homes. DOE expects households to be able to access these rebates in much of the country in 2024, meaning that states need to move very quickly to design and implement effective programs. Home retrofits are notoriously complex and inconvenient processes for residents to complete. Techniques such as behavioral journey mapping will be essential to ensuring that programs achieve strong recruitment and retention (i.e., residents actually persist through the programs), especially among vulnerable populations who face higher barriers than others.
This session relates to the conference theme of climate resilience because home energy upgrades are an essential strategy for decarbonizing housing in the US. How to design and deliver home upgrade rebates is still an open question, and the success of this major effort will rely on programs being designed with the end-user in mind.
