Proposed Session Description
Join Jim and Jodi as we learn about the Fab-Four top embodied carbon materials we can immediately focus on. The Federal Government is on this through a pilot procurement process to shift the market, as is NYS through EO #22. Let’s learn about how we can address steel, asphalt, concrete, and glass to radically and significantly reduce embodied carbon in our buildings and horizontal design!
Diversity and Inclusiveness
We would be willing to add another speaker to increase the diversity of perspectives. We do not yet know of a specific speaker, but it could be a product developer, a policy researcher, or someone from one of the many useful carbon calculation tools that exist.
Learning Objectives
Learn and be able to share the % impact of embodied carbon from our built environment
Identify at least three resources to help your firm reduce embodied carbon in these 4 materials
Be able to share with clients not only the current incentives and mandates regarding carbon, but the innovation and beauty in designs that reduce embodied carbon
Know how to use and require EPDs in your work
Has this session been presented before?
No
Additional Comments
Submitted to the NYS GBC that also takes place in the spring, in Syracuse, NY.
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 2 - Some prior knowledge helpful.

Review of current legislation at state and federal levels, especially those tied to incentives
Discussion of EPDs and specification processes
Review of real world examples of reducing embodied carbon in DESIGN, including synergies

Comments about your speaker roster
JIm and Jodi have presented together often and have an engaging and dynamic repore, especially on the topic of carbon, education, and process shift.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
This is some nuts and bolts stuff to feed the adaptation of the firms and the work. It is not directly about adapting to climate change, but about how climate change must be addressed by our own design and material shifts that will make is more resilient as practitioners and mitigate future carbon impacts.

Full Description
This sessions addresses the four very common and most carbon-burdened materials in the building industry. It also will reveal to the attendees the policies at federal and at some state levels, and illustrate how to excel in relation to those policies and the need to evolve toward carbon-neutral designs as quickly as possible.
