Boston 2023 Areas of Focus
Proposed Session Description
Investigate the impact of climate change on the performance and comfort of existing and new multifamily buildings. The study involves creating energy models and future weather projections to test the impacts of efficiency measures under various climate scenarios on buildings of different sizes. We will discuss how to incorporate future weather data into current design and modeling practices, plan for future retrofits, and address potential operational and comfort issues that may occur over time.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our session will help design teams and building owners plan for future scenarios, safeguarding tenant comfort and resilience in affordable multifamily buildings.
Learning Objectives
Learn about weather files and the methods for creating future weather data, including file conversion for different modeling tools.
Learn how climate change may affect future extreme conditions, building performance, and indoor comfort over time, using multifamily projects of different sizes as case studies.
Discuss potential problems and future retrofits under different climate conditions.
Discuss the pros and cons of integrating climate change and 'planning over time' into our design practice.

Comments about your speaker roster
During the presentation, three presenters will share their knowledge and experience. Two of them are energy modelers specializing in processing weather data, simulation, and various modeling tools currently used for design decisions and certifications. The other presenter is an engineer, construction supervisor, and plumber with hands-on experience. Together, they will cover topics ranging from modeling weather data files to specific design considerations, implementations, and operations.

Full Description
Building energy analysis currently relies on weather data from the past and does not consider the potential impacts of climate change. We aim to incorporate climate change into the design discussion by examining real-world projects as case studies. We will investigate how climate parameters are expected to change in the future and the potential future effects on energy performance, comfort levels, and operational issues. This will allow us to critically evaluate high-performance efficiency measures and design strategies under the current energy code, such as TEDI and Passive House. Moreover, for existing buildings, considering the alteration in climate parameters will enable the property owners and team to prepare better for capital expenditures and building retrofit measures to cope with future climate, alongside BERDO and BEUDO requirements.
