Proposed Session Description
This will be a fun, fast-paced and interactive session that invites designers and architects to try their hand at deploying the logic of panelization to adapt a design for offsite construction and passive house performance. We'll work independently or with teams to imbue their design with as many intersections between Passive House and Offsite Panelization as possible. Learn ways that allow for shorter construction times, less material waste, and tighter/higher performing envelopes.
Learning Objectives
Leverage the principles of offsite construction to achieve best envelope performance and project savings.
Recognize design moves that play to the strengths of offsite construction, and pitfalls that inevitably compromise the performance or competitiveness of an offsite approach.
Collaborate with fellow conference goers in identifying offsite-informed solutions to different programs, balancing design and performance-driven choices.
Understand the basic differences between panelized and modular construction as well as various forms of mass timber as well as their highest and best use cases.

Session Format Details
We'll give an upbeat 15-minute intro to the principles of offsite panelization to equip participants with a few basic rules of the game, then cut them loose, first to "markup a project" and then to do a rapid-fire design exercise before sharing their sketch on the big screen during a final 15-minute roundup at the end to assess how successfully their scheme can be panelized, shipped and raised on site. This is geared for designers, architects and engineers who like to draw and collaborate on the fly. Ideally we would need a room with round 8- or 10-seater tables and a projector.

As construction projects in the Northeast gradually face higher and higher energy code requirements, offsite fabrication presents a compelling solution for decarbonization and reducing waste, but ARCHITECTS OFTEN DON'T KNOW HOW AND WHERE TO START. If they could learn some basics of panelization to apply at the very outset of design, they could have greater success committing their clients to PH performance from the beginning and avoid costly redesigns or exploring time-consuming dead ends.
