Proposed Session Description
Millions of questions are asked and answered throughout the design process, and we do our best to make sure that we have sound reasoning behind WHY we do what we do. But, if someone asks you WHY you did what you did on a project, could your answer be “Because, CARBON” every single time? This session will go into common questions posed throughout the design of a K-12 school in Cambridge, MA, and how the design team helped answer those questions by tracking carbon flows not commonly assessed and using that data to inform their design direction. Some of the questions raised include: - Should the existing building be saved or should we consider new construction? - It’s a tight site, should we consider ground-mounted PV or should we plant more trees? - What should our structural system be? - What’s the best solution for dealing with contaminated soils? - What mechanical system should we consider? - Should we install PV locally or look to purchasing 100% renewable energy instead?
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session contains an all women panel displaying women leadership in architecture, engineering, and sustainability fields.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will better understand the relative impact of different carbon flows and how they can be influential throughout the design process.

Full Description
Addressing carbon is a complex issue. Without a full picture of exactly what impacts carbon throughout the design, construction, and operations process, how can we be sure that we are maximizing our carbon reduction through smart decisions? This session explores how carbon implications can be a key decision-making tool and the potential for a holistic view of whole-project carbon flows that go beyond what is considered for LEED credit.
