I am a Certified Passive House Consultant, Builder & Verifier, HERS Rater and former high-performance builder.
Proposed Session Description
Sheridan Small Homes is a project that originated in the classroom at the Rhode Island School of Design. The two passive house prototype student designs were created as a solution to increase affordable housing and make use of 200 undersized vacant lots in Providence, RI. The homes were funded through a combination of energy grants and incentive programs and were built by an apprentice training program that provides valuable work experience and career opportunities for low-income diverse community members
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our session addresses affordable housing and career opportunities for low-income, diverse community members.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will be able to incorporate construction techniques and concepts learned in the workshop that will simplify designing and executing Passive House rated assemblies.
Applying the workshop's discussion of deliberately selected building science topics, attendees will be able to view the construction process through a unique and holistic load reduction lens.
Through a discussion of lessons learned, attendees will be able prepare a Passive House project for success during the pre-construction process.
Attendees will be able to understand and navigate the potential financial incentives dedicated for high-performance construction.
Has this session been presented before?
No
Additional Comments
I presented on this project at ABX on 12/02/2020, but the focus was the Passive House Verification process. This workshop will be more holistic and include panelists representing different aspect of the project. It will include a Power Point presentation, but the slide deck will be unique.
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 2 - Some prior knowledge helpful.
Session Format Details
The session will be framed around a Power Point slide deck which will be divided into four portions: 1) Introduction, origin, design and development 2) Construction details and building science, 3) Impact on the community, city, building code momentum & advancement, and energy/load reduction, 4) Questions. (Note: portions of 1-3 are intended to elicit audience engagement).

Full Description
This project addresses a variety of issues: 1) the need for more affordable housing, 2) re-purposing of unused lots, 3) creating career opportunities for low-income diverse community members, and 4) reducing the carbon impact of home construction. Some of the ways this session will impact attendees include: 1) altering the perception that PHIUS+ Certification is always financially prohibitive, 2) altering the perception that PHIUS+ Certification is too difficult to achieve for small footprint construction and/or inexperienced builders, 3) shining light on the substantial gulf that exists between state building code and PHIUS certification through load analysis, 4) a real world demonstration of the possibility of aligning community resources to improve people's lives.
