WHY is it so hard to get everyone on the same page for Passive House projects? Passive House can be intimidating. It’s a challenging standard with strict performance and testing requirements, with precise details and documentation. Many teams are hesitant about impacts to budgets and the ability to find a contractor who can pull it all together. How can we help teams get through these barriers? This session will explore our solution through specifications. Using case studies from recent passive house projects, we will discuss the importance of specifications and drawings to the Passive House process and highlight key elements of our new open-source Passive House specifications resource. Why? To help facilitate communication among project teams, to improve performance testing outcomes, and to help make your passive house dreams a reality .

Learning Objectives
Understand the importance of contract documents, both drawings and specifications, in setting Passive House expectations.
Interpret which parts of the Passive House certification process are best explained and where in the contract documents.

Gain insight in ways to share knowledge through connecting drawings to clear, concise, correct, and complete specifications.

Session Format Details
Introduce the problem, for multifamily and single to three family homes. Explain the specifications, full length and short form types. Present 2-3 case studies, with photos. Conclusions, including Q+A with audience.

Full Description
WHY do specifications matter for Passive House certification? Open-source specifications give every team an opportunity to understand what the passive house program requires and the tools to implement Passive House standards on their projects, both large and small. This session will introduce project teams to key elements of passive house specifications while addressing questions such as: How can better documentation improve communications between Architect and Contractor? and How can we make the Passive House process more clear and improve testing outcomes?
