Proposed Session Description
Climate crisis and social justice are interconnected and must be approached in an integrated way in the building industry to successfully transform our world. In this session, three leaders will use applied research, detailed case studies, and lived experience to unpack tangible solutions (and mistakes) they have made in their design/build practices towards climate regeneration and social justice. We will examine issues surrounding climate impact, human health, ecosystem toxicity, race, immigration status, gender, sexuality, ability and economic class. Participants will leave this session with clear actions they can take to progress this work forward, together!
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session topic directly addresses racial and economic justice. Two presenters founded and co-own a worker cooperative company that is trans-, woman-, & BIPOC- owned which utilizes the triple bottom line approach. One speaker is white, queer and trans, and founded both the Diversity Caucus and the Anti-Racist Action Group of BEBL and has been organizing for racial justice and anti-oppression for decades. One speaker is white, cisgender, straight, and Jewish, and is a member of the Anti-Racist Action Group of BEBL. Our case studies feature BIPOC organizations & communities & tradespeople, and gender and sexuality diversity. Thank you so much for this question on the proposal form - YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Learning Objectives

LO2: Learn holistic, integrated approaches which includes a palette of solutions and resources to these problems using case studies as examples.
LO3: Identify growth areas and “low hanging fruit” in their own practices.
LO4: Leave with tangible ideas to Implement solutions in their own practices.

Session Format Details
We want to present enough content and specifics with our case studies to make clear the interconnected approach; and also provide time for attendees to grapple directly with concepts and practice applying them, so intend for a mix of case study presentation and then either small group work or self-reflection or both.
Recommended Length
90-minute session
Comments about your speaker roster
The three of us have collectively spoken at many conferences and events throughout our careers, both virtual and in-person, and have taught many courses and have strong educational backgrounds, both virtual and in-person. We value effective pedagogical techniques and actively work to incorporate those into our presentations. We have cultivated a dynamic and engaging presentation style through years of co-presentation in a wide variety of platforms. We always seek to learn from our presentations and consider it a "craft" alongside our design/build craft.

Full Description
"Integrated" is such a big word that many of us are behind in theory, yet it can be hard to pin down what it looks like or how to practice it. We will make a humble attempt at this critical sea-change to our mono-issue thinking so prevalent in our culture. We will present case studies of how to take an integrated approach with design build project delivery to address climate justice. We have dedicated our careers to working at the intersection of climate regeneration and social justice and have developed real-world tangible solutions in climate accounting, materials development, research and analysis, anti-racism initiatives, network- and movement-building, business practice and project development, policy development, and more. We have cultivated a dynamic and engaging presentation style through years of co-presentation in a wide variety of platforms. Whereas other presentations may look at building materials, efficiency, regional-scale impacts, business practices, social action, and social justice as separate topics or strategies, the strength of this presentation is to illustrate the connections between these impact areas and present an integrated, dynamic strategy that is both accessible and multi-faceted. Finally, having presented foundational information about embodied carbon, building materials, climate crisis and social justice, and regional contexts in 2019's BE Boston Keynote Address, this presentation offers more direct case study and solutions-oriented material to build upon that baseline knowledge.
