Proposed Session Description
PHIUS+ 2021 is the next progression of the PHIUS+ passive building standard which was created to guide builders to success in the design and construction of passive buildings. This update marks the next step towards making net zero universal. The standard has charged forward in two key areas: 1) new provisions that incentivize building electrification and 2) a prescriptive path for single family homes intending to help facilitate greater adoption.
This presentation focuses on the notable updates to the well-known performance based passive approach, as well as a deep dive into the prescriptive path – both how the individual requirements were developed and how to apply it to your next project.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The release of the PHIUS+ 2021 Prescriptive path was partly motivated by wider adoption and lowering the entry point for high performance building -- an attempt at inclusion and "better buildings for all" and reducing overhead/soft costs.
The design methodology PHIUS has solely promoted in the past relies on energy modeling, on energy design to aggressive performance targets, and we have been committed to the idea that this is necessary to achieve high performance with enough flexibility for designers to find their most cost-effective solutions. Last fall (2019) the PHIUS Tech Committee considered whether the overhead and the skills needed for such modeling were a barrier to wider use of the standard and whether there was enough data and experience to dispense with it, to put forward a more prescriptive recipe, to get passive building “down to a system,” in the specific context of single-family residential buildings. PHIUS+ 2021 adds a single-family prescriptive path that removes the requirement for an energy model. As a hybrid approach, this path has prescriptions for both the envelope and mechanical aspects of buildings while allowing some performance tradeoffs within those two realms.
Learning Objectives
Understand the updates to the PHIUS+ 2021 performance-based certification metrics and requirements.
Recognize the PHIUS+ 2021 Prescriptive approach and the limitations of scope for its application.
Identify the rationale behind each of the PHIUS+ 2021 prescriptive requirements.
Evaluate the impact of the updated standards on the future of the passive building design for your projects and the greater design and construction industry.

Full Description
PHIUS+ 2021 introduces a prescriptive path for single family residences. This is the first ever prescriptive approach for passive building design and is intended to help support mass adoption and dampen the learning curve for high performance building.
PHIUS+ 2021's performance approach takes a step toward decarbonization and electrification. It is well suited as a baseline performance standard for net zero buildings.
