Proposed Session Description
STEM educational facilities no longer simply serve as spaces to learn within; these facilities have the potential to be spaces students learn from. A curious student can observe the structure around them and ponder why it was built the way it was, and how those lessons can apply to their careers and life outside the classroom. For example, why is the roof so much larger than the building? Why doesn’t this lab have a ceiling? Why does this “all-electric” building have a gas boiler?
The New Science Center at Cape Cod Community College is one such facility full of examples of small and large design decisions to reduce both operational and embodied carbon, with lessons that can be applied to all types of construction. This presentation will review why the team implemented these strategies, the impact they had on the carbon footprint of the project, and how participants can apply these lessons to other types of projects.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
1. One presenter is female, and the other is LGBT.
2. The session will show how low-carbon design decisions promote building up a local workforce for economic equity and opportunity.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will be able to assess system options for their project to achieve carbon reduction, resiliency, and net zero goals
Attendees will be able to weigh the relative impacts of both operational and embodied carbon from their design decisions
Attendees will be able to apply lessons about construction and materials strategies from this case study to all different project types and sizes
Attendees will be able to utilize cost-effective strategies for energy and embodied carbon reductions and renewable energy production.

Full Description
The path to net zero carbon for projects has been well established: reduce energy consumption and offset with renewable energy. As operational carbon is minimized or eliminated, the embodied carbon of the construction takes on an outsize importance. It is critical for the industry to consider both embodied and operational carbon, as well as the implications of design decisions on cost and resiliency. One interesting lesson from this case study is that completely eliminating the connection to fossil fuels may not be the best way to reduce the overall operational and embodied carbon of the project with available technologies.
