Proposed Session Description
By midcentury, all buildings in New York state are required to be carbon neutral. How we get there is the focus of NYSERDA’s upcoming Carbon Neutral Buildings Roadmap. As part of Governor Cuomo’s Green New Deal for New York, NYSERDA has been spearheading the development of an overarching framework for decarbonizing New York’s buildings by 2050. This presentation will outline the policies and programmatic areas that will achieve radical reduction in the carbon emissions of buildings. The strategies in the roadmap involve both building-level analysis of the technologies and design and construction methods contributing to carbon neutral buildings, as well as a systems-level analysis of the most cost-effective ways to simultaneously decarbonize the state’s electricity grid while driving deep efficiency across varying building sectors, typologies, and geographies. To support the roadmap, NYSERDA has commissioned research into costs and the rate of technology adoption for various carbon reduction measures. The research assesses energy use for several decarbonization pathways, as well as packages of measures that consist of envelope and other energy conservation measures, smart controls and load shifting, electrification, and onsite storage and generation. This session will describe the Roadmap’s policy priorities, supporting research, and coordination with New York’s Climate Action Council. It will also detail strategies and topics of interest for low-income customers and those in disadvantaged communities.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
We have a section of the roadmap focused on strategies for low-income and disadvantaged communities.
Learning Objectives
Understand the policies and paths forward for decarbonizing NY’s priority building sectors - single family, multi-family, low-to-medium rise office, and higher education.
Communicate research findings.
Provide an overview of the current state of buildings in New York with respect to conditions and energy using equipment.
Has this session been presented before?
Yes
When and Where?
Various venues, but not quite in this form. We'll be presenting new research findings, particularly cost information for measure packages - and policy recommendations.
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 2 - Some prior knowledge helpful.
