Proposed Session Description
The greenhouse gas reduction potential of window retrofits on existing buildings has always been enormous. But retrofits have not historically been an option due to cost, performance, disruption, and long payback periods. However, technological innovation in this space has now made these assumptions moot. Developed over the last 4 years, the glass-on-glass adaptive glazing shields produced by INOVUES can transform existing single pane windows into high performing multipane windows without removal or replacement. Can a single technology really change the cost/benefits for building decarbonization projects? This panel discussion will dive into the realities of window retrofit projects with specific examples. Utility representatives as well as building owners will tease out some of the complexities of window retrofits as an ECM, and talk about local incentives relative to the Northeast.

Our firm is minority-owned. I am a first generation Syrian-American immigrant, a minority in my industry.
Learning Objectives
Evaluate window retrofits as an energy/sustainability option or ECM
Calculate the cost/benefits of window retrofits in the decarbonization effort
Estimate the energy savings potential of window retrofits
Learn to differentiate between window retrofit solutions/options

Session Format Details
We will be presenting a short case study on a recent project, including details on energy savings and ROI, followed by a lively panel discussion about the role of window retrofits in ECM and decarbonization at large. After our detailed case study, we will open it up to an expert panel to discuss the future of window retrofits as an ECM: • PMO representative • Utility representative • MEP representative We will make this engaging as possible, asking attendees about their experience trying to incorporate window retrofits into projects in the past, or asking them to “Guess the ROI” on a project. We will keep it lively and fun.

Comments about your speaker roster
We are still in the process of extending invitations to our panelists and will update this as soon as we can. We have engaged with MEP, PMO, and utility representatives on many occasions about this topic and many have interesting analyses based on their experience.

Full Description
For years, building owners have thought of window retrofits as a capital expense. But this new technology makes it possible for these to be an energy saving measure. Because INOVUES’ invention makes existing window retrofits more affordable, it facilitates additional sustainability solutions. For example, it allows for decarbonization through the elimination of fossil fuels, building skin load reduction, electrification, and HVAC system downsizing. The insulating glass retrofits can be a tool in the toolkit of a building-energy-use strategy. It can make building projects possible where they haven’t been possible before. With the evolution of the INOVUES Glazing Shield, glass façade choices become a reality, including architectural glass innovations like PV, dynamic, self-cleaning, and safety glass. Which we hope would be of benefit to attendees and building owners.
