I have over 40 years of engineering experience HVAC, building energy systems, and thermal energy production. I have analyses district distribution systems in Boston, NYC, Philidelphia, Baltimore, university campuses, pharmaceutical research and manufacturing plants, military bases, Federal Government's Washington DC system, prisons, etc.
Proposed Session Description
District steam systems are inefficient thermal energy delivery systems that can be electrified. With highly efficient heat pump technologies, performance is close to electric resistance heating. The result is a convenient climate solution for the few that can afford it, leaving scare high-cost electricity for everyone else during the extreme winter weather conditions. This presentation is a technical analysis of why a district steam heating system is so inefficient.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Is there equity if those who can afford an efficient easy solution without reducing the load and leave crumbs for everyone else to heat their high performance NESEA building. The electricity will end up being rationed by price.
Learning Objectives
Acquire the basic understanding of how a district steam system works.
Identify where the inefficiencies exist in a district steam system.
Acquire information to determine if a district steam system work for them or clients.
Obtain the analytical skills to analysis any proposal for district thermal energy supply. Determine if it is a good deal. The skills will apply to district steam, district hot water, and district chilled water.
Has this session been presented before?
Yes
When and Where?
AEE East June 2023.
Additional Comments
Vicinity a sponsor of AEE East had my presentation removed from the records because it was bad for business. Vicinity made a sales pitch as a professional session at the conference. A practice NESEA would not engage in.

Full Description
Renewable electricity supplies by 2050 the carbon free target date will be in short supply. Short supply means high cost. If a large segment of our building stock (Vicinity Boston supplies 65+million square feet in Boston and Cambridge & Con Edison supplied over 1,500 large building in NYC) is inefficiently supplied with electricity derived thermal energy for heating, DHW, process manufacturing, etc. this will tighten supply driving cost up. The middle class and social justice communities will suffer the most. They will not be able to afford to heat the high-performance buildings designed and built by the NESEA community. The steam supplied buildings will not do the upgrades required to live and work in high performance buildings because a simple greenwashed solution has been presented to them. Everyone losses because climate change was not addressed..
