Proposed Session Description
Franklin Cummings Tech (FCT) is transforming from a technical/vocational post-secondary school into a 21st-century hub for workforce development, offering technology-focused, vocational, and green economy-driven higher education. The panel will present a case study of an all-electric and resilient building as a teaching lab, minimizing the school’s environmental impact and demonstrating hands-on education to provide equitable workforce opportunities for an underserved community.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Using Franklin Cummings Tech’s (FCT) future Nubian Square campus design as a case study, this session addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion in several ways. 1. FCT is a college providing associate and bachelor’s degrees and certifications in various fields. It serves primarily Black, Latinx, and Asian students; most are low-income, first-generation college students. Some are the first in their families to graduate high school. The design supports their future-forward education and development as leaders and implementers in the green economy. 2. After six decades of disinvestment in Nubian Square, the project, as the sole education institution in Nubian Square, will contribute to the neighborhood’s transformation and engage the local community with higher education opportunities on display. 3. The new campus development and design team is substantially led by women. FCT CEO and President Dr. Aisha Francis, the college’s first woman and person of color to lead the institution, is a champion for its students and its critical mission and vision for the future. 4. 50% of the panel are women, 50% are BIPOC.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will discover lessons learned by the project team revisiting the project's energy performance and envelope design using the Relative Performance Pathway to meet the 2023 MA Energy Opt-in Specialized Code.
Attendees will learn about all-electric building systems complying with the 2023 MA Energy Opt-in Specialized Code and Boston’s carbon neutrality initiatives that serve the varied, demanding functional needs of vocational and technical labs.
Attendees will acquire an understanding of how to approach design and development projects more deeply, utilizing a regenerative approach that centers justice and equity and engages the local community, through a case study of a building serving primarily BIPOC, first-generation college students and that delivers higher education and economic advancement in the heart of Boston’s Black community, Nubian Square.
Attendees will explore an academic institution committed to transforming hands-on education for the future green economy workforce and gain responsive-design strategies to meet the needs of current academic programs while futureproofing the building with ‘loose-fit’ spaces to support future academic programs.

Carrie Havey, LEED Fellow, SITES AP, Fitwel Amb - Carrie Havey, LEED Fellow, is a Principal with The Green Engineer and has over 13 years of experience as a sustainability consultant. She works collaboratively with project teams to provide sustainable design advice and LEED guidance throughout all project phases. Aniruddha S. Nene, P.E., LEED AP – Ani is a Vice President and Operational Head of the Boston Office of Cosentini Associates and has over 15 years of experience in Mechanical engineering and designing high-performance buildings. Ani has presented several times, including a recent presentation at ULI Boston Market Council: Introduction to BERDO as well as multiple presentations on “10th Edition of Mass Energy Code and New Energy Requirements” and “Laboratories for the Future.” Marvin J. Loiseau, Ed.D - Dr. Marvin Loiseau began his tenure at Franklin Cummings Tech in July 2011 and previously served as Dean of Recruitment. Before joining the college, he worked at Mount Ida College as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admissions. He has higher education experience in undergraduate and graduate admissions, financial aid, and residence life through his roles at Mount Ida College, Babson College, and Suffolk University. He received his BA in Business Management from Mount Ida College, a Master’s Degree in Education from Suffolk University, and a Doctorate in Education from Northeastern University.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Although we have not indicated a preference for a 60 vs. 90-minute duration, a 90-minute session would allow for a deeper dive into FCT’s academic mission and program in addition to the technical aspects of its climate resilient and sustainable design.

Full Description
The new FCT design and academic program will have an outsized impact on its students, the Nubian Square neighborhood as a hub of Boston’s Black community, and Greater Boston’s green economy workforce. By translating each of the following project goals into the design, FCT hopes to create and inspire the leaders & implementers for a resilient future: • Optimize the sustainability and flexibility of the building, allowing it to tread lightly on the environment and evolve to meet future needs. • Uphold FCT’s values of supporting a diverse community in all aspects of the project, committing to best practices for contracting with M/WBEs, and employing a diverse workforce. • Design a durable and inspiring building that conveys to the public and students, FCT's mission as an institution of higher learning with a technology focus. • Design the building as a teaching tool for students and visitors. In the session, the panel will address: • Design for a highly diverse student body that provides a superior educational environment and social and academic support spaces that sustain students in their academic lives. • How a “loose-fit” building design for technical education can meet the demands of current and planned academic programs and be ready to respond to changes in technical education and the green economy. • Designing a learning environment that serves as a teaching tool. • How a design can have an impact beyond its site by collaborating with other developments in the neighborhood. • The incorporation of all-electric systems, reduced embodied carbon in structure and materials, and renewable energy to deliver a resilient educational institution, adaptable to future needs and conditions. • The findings and results from testing the project’s completed construction documents against the new MA Opt-in Specialized Energy Code.
