I have presented at numerous Efficiency Vermont and NESEA conferences over my lifetime membership at NESEA
Proposed Session Description
Two low embodied and operational carbon 10k sf dorm/apt buildings were recently completed in Vermont. Modeling compared the building as built, the same building ignoring embodied carbon impacts, and the building built to code. The BEAM tool and NREL's Cambium tool were used for materials and operational carbon emission forecasting. High performance features and lessons learned about how to bring carbon impact analysis into the design process will be discussed.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Only in our inclusion and highlighting of a young architect
Learning Objectives
Understand accounting for embodied and operational carbon emission modeling in a high performance building context
Understand the various steps in carbon accounting, and the context of "cradle to gate" accounting in the whole life cycle \carbon analysis
Compare the embodied carbon to operational carbon in a high performance building, including future changes in grid electricity emissions
Understand some of the key "pinch-points" that can undermine the best low-embodied-carbon intentions
Has this session been presented before?
No
Additional Comments
Just the embodied carbon part of this project will be discussed at the Better Buildings by Design conference in 2024
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 2 - Some prior knowledge helpful.
Session Format
Presentation followed by facilitated discussion or breakout groups
Session Format Details
If we have 60 minutes we will have ~15 minutes for Q&A; If there is 90 minutes we will reserve half an hour for small group discussion and reporting out.

Comments about your speaker roster
Jacob and Andy are seasoned presenters and consultants. Catherine is a young architect who has done a remarkable job in managing this project, while providing architectural design and integrating low carbon features into the design and construction. She will be presenting buillding and her role and we will all be highlighting her important role in actualizing the clients high performance/low carbon goals
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
We are excited to share this work, particularly pitfalls, pinch-points, factors that help with success, and the integration of embodied and life cycle operational energy.

Full Description
While many understand embodied carbon and more understand operational carbon, integrating these into the design and construction process is less understood. Emerging advances in both embodied and future operational energy estimating can be taken advantage of to minimize both impacts. Understanding this process can lead to better decision-making, particularly at "plinth-points" in the design and construction process.
