Proposed Session Description
The last 18-months have brought unprecedented challenges to mission-based firms in the high performance building sector. How do we address growth and building performance goals, while maintaining and fostering a collaborative work environment and an inclusive culture in the age of remote work and public health crisis?
Petersen Engineering, an MEP/FP firm, has been tasked to design thousands of new climate resilient, comfortable, sustainable affordable housing units for marginalized communities in the greater Boston area. As a result, Petersen Engineering has more than doubled in size over the past two years. In NYC, EN-POWER GROUP, an engineering firm that is 60% women, focuses on carbon and energy reductions, has seen similar growth in engineering analysis, MEP design and construction administration, and lighting direct-install divisions.
How have these firms adapted their practices to embrace growth in the midst of a pandemic and within the social justice movement, what lessons have they learned, and what issues are still outstanding? Bring your thought-provoking questions to this moderated conversation in which we touch on:
How do we maintain a collaborative culture in the midst of rapid growth?
How do we create the “social glue” necessary to bond our remote employees with the rest of the team and vice versa?
How can we advance social justice in more meaningful ways - not just based on the sectors we work in but also within our own team?
How can we foster diversity and inclusion given these challenges? How are we even defining diversity?
In what ways might our cultural biases interfere with our recruiting and retention efforts?
How can we, individually and as an industry, help develop a pipeline of emerging professionals to help scale our organizations for the work ahead?

Why is this session important?
Fostering remote culture is new to many companies and industries and we need to share best practices
The building energy industry must work to improve inclusivity and company culture to a key avenue for achieving a diverse and inclusive culture
Companies must learn best practices to be prepared to successfully deal with rapid growth as the NYC retrofit market is expected to expand 13x due to Local Law 97 (according to an Urban Green Council study): https://www.urbangreencouncil.org/sites/default/files/urban_green_retrofit_market_analysis.pdf. The market for high performance buildings is growing rapidly in Boston as well.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our discussion about company culture will explore how we need to reframe our language to be more inclusive to address equity and diversity within our sector. We are reframing the conversation away from culture fit to culture add and value alignment, and we will discuss how hiring and retention practices are key to addressing diversity and equity.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will get an appreciation for the value of company culture for incubating and sustaining growth
