Proposed Session Description
As climate risks intensify, the industry must reassess how it defines “high-performance buildings” to explicitly include resiliency. This session will explore critical steps including updating building codes and policies to include forward-looking climate data and prioritizing resilience as a core design principle, particularly in the affordable housing sector. Through example policies and design strategies, this session is a call-to-action to ensure a more “climate ready” future.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session will speak to the need to prioritize resiliency, especially in affordable housing, since low income communities are often disproportionately impacted by climate change and its associated risks.
Learning Objectives
Integrate resiliency into their own projects, using insights into design strategies learned from the session
Better understand role municipalities & practitioners have in ensuring resiliency is implemented as core design strategy
Identify existing laws and policies that prioritize resiliency
Articulate the need for prioritizing resiliency, as well as performance, within the residential building design process, especially in affordable housing.

Full Description
This session is crucial to drive awareness of and accelerate the transition towards prioritizing resiliency in the design and construction processes. It addresses significant topics, such as the need for building codes and policies to take into account future climate risks, not just current conditions, as well as the role municipalities play in establishing regulations and incentives that drive industry change. The content includes how practitioners can integrate resilience as a core principle in the design process. Furthermore, the session spotlights the need for “climate ready” buildings – aka properties that prioritize performance and resiliency – across the residential building sector, but especially in low-income housing. Given intensifying climate risks to our built environment, this session aligns exceptionally with the theme of resiliency.
