Boston 2022 Areas of Focus
Proposer Job Title
Director of Sustainable Design
Proposed Session Description
Design professionals are charged with providing clients with code compliant solutions. But what if that solution leaves your client exposed to financial penalties for carbon emissions or to damage from the effects of extreme climate conditions? Many jurisdictions are setting carbon emissions limits and imposing significant penalties for noncompliance, like Boston's 2021 BERDO updates. An unsuspecting design professional can suddenly be on the defensive when actual carbon emissions and the resultant penalties exceed expectations and building owners look for retribution. As extreme weather, including extended periods of severe heat or cold, wind or flooding are becoming more prevalent, buildings that historically may not have been vulnerable could be exposed to damage and losses. This presentation will identify the forward-looking risks to Owners and design teams related to environmental/climate concerns and how to develop resilient sustainable design strategies to mitigate these risks.

Full Description
With recent legislation like Boston's BERDO 2.0 and New York City's Local Law 97, building owners and designers are "In" for designing a resilient zero carbon future whether they realize it or not. This presentation will guide owners and design professionals on how to proactively meet or exceed the goals of the legislation rather than being stuck paying penalties.
