Proposed Session Description
In this session, attendees will learn how to attack energy and water-related inefficiencies with a portfolio strategy that embodies a top-down and boots on the ground approach while meeting the needs of different stakeholders: real estate owner, asset manager, fund manager, property manager, and property staff. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a national multifamily housing owner that is deep into implementing their ESG, sustainability, and energy goals, and from property managers working to implement these strategies at their properties. Through a facilitated panel discussion, attendees will see how each stakeholder approaches and values the impact of:
• A tiered portfolio-wide implementation of a specific energy efficiency technology (ex: LEDs).
• Access to engineering experts, remote and onsite, that enable property staff across the country to increase the performance of their portfolios.
• Selected energy retrofits to meet the specific needs of the property, while contributing to corporate sustainability goals.

Jessica holds a leadership position at a global organization and is responsible for the implementation of the firms 'tomorrow’s world' sustainability platform, focusing on climate risk and meeting carbon reduction targets throughout Nuveen’s U.S. real estate portfolio. Clifford also is a Merchant Marine veteran.

Ideally, we would have Clifford serve as moderator to guide the conversation. At least one speaker (Jessica) will only be able to participate virtually unless things dramatically change with COVID.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Travel will be tough for this group and would likely be best served by a virtual conference. If that’s a non-starter and you need to have in-person sessions, we have another option (see our other submission) that can take a Case Study approach to get the information across.

Full Description
As real estate owners expand their portfolios and become more geographically dispersed, it is critical they manage and balance competing goals, from the fund level to the property level, to reduce energy intensity and meet sustainability goals. This is especially important for large national real estate owners who have an opportunity and responsibility to reduce carbon emissions and create healthier environments for their tenants. It also is important for those in sustainability to understand the motivations and roadblocks that these stakeholders encounter, which will enable them to create impactful solutions.
