Bart Bales, PE, MSME is a master's level, professional engineer with with more than thirty-five years of energy engineering experience, Over the last ten years, Bart has focused on high-performance, energy efficient heating and cooling systems and especially heat pumps and energy recovery ventilation devices. He has spoken in various venues and taught well-received one-day workshops over an 8-state region. Heat pumps and energy recovery ventilation systems are critical to the electrification of buildings which when paired with renewable electricity sources can result in buildings requiring no fossil or combustion-based systems.
Bart has served for many years as a state-wide facility and energy advisor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Through this and other programs he has provided numerous technical energy audits on public buildings including school, office buildings, hospitals a correctional facility and numerous other buildings.
Bart is also a long-time NESEA member and has served on many program committees and on the NESEA Board of Directors.
Proposed Session Description
Separating the conditioning of ventilation air from the general heating and cooling results in significant opportunities for reducing total energy use required by an HVAC system and improves the quality of provision of outside air to all spaces. Heat and energy recovery ventilation systems heat incoming air using the thermal energy in the exhaust air. Use of water or refrigerant rather than air dramatically reduces the energy required for transport heating and cooling to various locations in the building. Examples of systems using this combined approach (energy recovery and heat pumps) will be provided. These systems are critical to the development of all electric buildings served by renewable electricity. Case studies will include retrofit of an existing commercial building previously served by rooftop (air handling) units, a new design for a large Passive House residence, and a proposed conversion of a large institutional building from a VAV system to dedicated outside air and heat pump systems. Other case studies for institutional, commercial and residential applications will also be provided.

Learn how HVAC of existing buildings be retrofitted using dedicated outside air systems and heat pumps to greatly reduce overall energy use.
Learn how VAV and RTU (rooftop unit) systems can be converted to systems using dedicated outdoor air systems, heat recovery, and heat pumps.
Learn how to distinguish heat recovery ventilators from from energy recovery ventilators and when each type is best applied. Distinguish characteristics and performance of cross-flow heat exchangers and counter-flow heat exchangers.
Learn how the use of higher efficiency counter-flow exchangers results in warmer air delivery temperatures for greater comfort and for greater energy savings.

Mr. Bales is a pre-approved facility and energy engineer under a state-wide contract for Massachusetts. Speaker has taught many successful, highly rated one-day high-performance heat pumps and HVAC workshops across an 8-state region to engineers and architects. He is also an instructor for the Boston Architectural College teaching a design course concerning transforming an existing 500,000 square foot facility to net zero by 2050. He is also providing HVAC design (heat pumps and energy recovery ventilators) for a very large Passive House project in eastern Massachusetts.
