Consulting Energy & HVAC Engineer
Proposed Session Description
Separating the conditioning of ventilation air from the general heating and cooling results in significant opportunities for reducing total energy use required by an HVAC system and improves the quality of provision of outside air to all spaces. Heat and energy recovery ventilation systems heat incoming air using the thermal energy in the exhaust air. Use of water or refrigerant rather than air dramatically reduces the energy required for transport heating and cooling to various locations in the building. Examples of systems using this combined approach (energy recovery and heat pumps) will be provided. Examples will include retrofit of an existing commercial building previously served by rooftop (air handling) units, a new design for a Passive House residence, and a proposed conversion of a large institutional building from a VAV system to dedicated outside air and heat pump systems. Applications of ducted and ductless heat pumps will be included. Other case studies for institutional, commercial and residential applications will also be provided.
Why is this session important?
The following questions will be answered: How does one most effectively reduce the space heating and cooling loads for a building? How can HVAC of existing buildings be retrofitted using dedicated outside air systems and heat pumps to greatly reduce overall energy use? How does a dedicated outside air system assure better indoor air quality?
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Good HVAC design is good for all people in the affected buildings.
Learning Objectives
Learn how HVAC of existing buildings can be retrofitted using dedicated outside air systems and heat pumps to greatly reduce overall energy use.
Learn how VAV and RTU (rooftop unit) systems can be converted to systems using dedicated outdoor air systems, heat recovery, and heat pumps.
Learn how to distinguish heat recovery ventilators from energy recovery ventilators and when each type is best applied. Distinguish characteristics and performance of cross-flow heat exchangers and counter-flow heat exchangers.
Learn how the use of higher efficiency counter-flow exchangers results in warmer air delivery temperatures for greater comfort and for greater energy savings.

Additional Comments
This session is new and has not been provided before. The speaker is very experienced at providing successful, well-received learning experiences on HVAC-related topics about heat pumps and energy recovery ventilators through numerous one-day workshops across an 8-state region.
Session will be run in a continuously interactive format with presenter making comments and then asking for responses from attendees. Humor will be interspersed throughout to keep things lively. (Speaker has taught successful, highly rated one-day HVAC workshops across an 8-state region to engineers and architects)

Comments about your speaker roster
Bart Bales is registered professional master's mechanical engineer licensed in 4 states. He has worked as a consulting energy efficiency and HVAC engineer since 1984. Mr. Bales is a pre-approved facility and energy engineer under a state-wide contract for Massachusetts. Speaker has taught many successful, highly rated one-day high-performance heat pumps and HVAC workshops across an 8-state region to engineers and architects. He is also an instructor for the Boston Architectural College teaching a design course concerning transforming an existing 500,000 square foot facility to net zero by 2050. He also provided HVAC design (ducted heat pumps and energy recovery ventilators) for a large Passive House project.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
sessions shows applications for ducted heat pumps, as well as ductless heat pumps.
Inclusion of how-to information, as well as case studies, is needed by today's professionals. This workshop provides both.
