Proposed Session Description
This session provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between mentorship and sustainable design through the framework Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).
To address the climate crisis, developing the technical skills and knowledge required for designing high performance buildings is a top priority. It is imperative to pass knowledge on to the next generation of design professionals. Meanwhile, the A/E/C industry has been undergoing critical scrutiny and urgent transformation to address inequities within our professions and the built environments we create.
At the intersection of these two issues, we recognize that more than solving technical problems, sustainable design is about climate justice and creating a just and equitable world for all.
As we grapple with these challenges, we reach into our internal cultures to create effective, inclusive structures to build and support staff. Through the lens of EDI work, mentorship is crucial to providing equitable access to professional growth, ensuring the rich diversity of voices that make our work stronger.
We will share our experiences, successes, and challenges in creating effective organizational structures. We will then facilitate discussions in breakout sessions with prompts to guide the discussion. Finally, we’ll reconvene with a share-back of key take-aways and ideas.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our proposed speakers are women, with two WBE firms represented in the panel. They will speak to professional growth and organizational culture from different experience levels and perspectives. This session topic directly addresses equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our interactive session hopes to attract a diverse audience, including race, gender, and professional experience levels, to inform and enrich the discussion.

Full Description
This session discusses how the inextricable relationship between sustainability, inclusion, equity manifests in firm practice. It’s critical to pass knowledge on to the next generation of design professionals; and diverse representation is lacking in design, engineering, and sustainable design. This session will encourage attendees to think about how their firms' EDI values and goals are reflected from within, and explore mentorship structures to enable inclusive access for professional growth.
