Proposed Session Description
What does a culture of innovation look like? How do you know if you personally, or your firm, is reaching your potential? None of the problems we face today can be solved without embracing innovation, but our industry actually lags. At its essence, innovation is challenging the status quo: in our mindsets, cultures & processes. This session helps you unlock your IP (Innovation Potential), use metrics & indicators to assess capability & empower you to boost your IP & excel formulating solutions.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
whether internally, make sure all voices are heard and invited equally, or externally working with or impacting communities - the ability to do so with maximum effectiveness can be
Learning Objectives
Evaluate/assess your personal innovation mindset capability and that of your company, to identify areas for improvement. Discover how improvements you can make in innovation actually support sustainability efforts or initiatives that you may be struggling with so you can get "un-stuck".
Learn how different models and frameworks for innovation from other industries can be translated to apply in your specific context and learn what makes them fail over time, so you can avoid those pitfalls.
Understand what it takes to create a culture of innovation within your company and how to support that through leadership, teamwork and collaboration, and continuous learning for improvement.
Formulate strategies to instill and develop higher levels of innovation across your practice (without necessarily investing any money or tapping a lot of resources).

Additional Comments
The answer is actually "kind of". We have done many workshops about this within companies but in conferences, we've not actually presented this as its own topic. We did a virtual but NOT interactive session on this recently for Greenbuild 360 (the virtual follow on to the in-person conference) and will be doing a similar, but not exact session for AIA MN this month - but again, short and not very interactive. We've done two past sessions at this conference looking at "What our industry can learn from startups and enlightened corporations" through adapting the Agile Management approach - this is part of innovation, but not really the same - and was less about the "how". So this would be the very first time presenting this topic head-on and with a 'how to' approach!
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 1 - No prior knowledge needed.
Session Format
Collaborative problem-solving session
Workshop or skill-building session
Session Format Details
The ideal format for this workshop would be heavy engagement through interactive exercises - it could even be longer than 90 minutes if desired, but no less than 90 if possible. There are a series of exercises that we do in the companies that we would like to adapt and run in this session. It is a LOT of fun!! People leave really jazzed and excited to do something 'back home'! If a longer session does not work - I can still fit in one short exercise in a 60 minute session.
Recommended Length
90-minute session

Comments about your speaker roster
I'm sure there is a preference for multiple speakers and I generally love doing that, in this case, I have not yet met anyone who has been doing this work - or clients (design/construction) who have made enough progress to actually be able to contribute (yet! maybe by next year!). I have a lot of experience running workshops with very large groups and have done so at AIA, Greenbuild (and this conference in the past!) so I hope that won't count against me in this proposal.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Participants will leave with actionable frameworks, strategies and a full bibliography of resources to learn more, including books like Innovator's Method, Innovator's DNA, articles about Agile Management, resources to do a full organizational Innovation Assessment when they go back - a great way to start internal conversation and a 'roadmap' that we've created that outlines a process they can go thru within their company (regardless of company size) to go through steps to make this happen 'at home'. They will also learn from each other through interactive exercises. Debriefs from exercises will be how educational content is shared.

Full Description
The biggest reason this topic is important is that we can not achieve the outcomes we want without innovation (i.e., resilience, equity). It is imperative that we build this strength.
For the past 5 years, we have been working deeply with design firms around the country, helping them get “unstuck” as they struggle to implement critical design strategies for climate resilience, health and equity. Through that experience we’ve come to realize that every barrier typically encountered can be tracked back to innovation, both as a skill and a practice (a personal ability and an intentional, organizational cultural imperative). When we’ve led firms through the process to develop innovation that we intend to replicate (in brief) in this session, we’ve seen that it pulls on many threads – but also connects them.
For example, having “all voices heard”, overcoming the “this won’t work” mindsets of consultants or clients, structuring charrettes or working meetings specifically to support innovation (it’s a “thing”) – so that there is better clarity about what, why and how to pursue a strategy – all of that can be improved, accelerated and amplified through a lens of innovation, which also happens to get people excited and re-invigorated.
One thing we’ve found (by accident) is that when working with executive leadership in firms, they can get defensive about certain topics or have mental blocks about shifting how things are done, if you address those issues head-on. But when you come at those issues through the lens of innovation, it’s amazing how open and interested they are and how much progress can be made which was not possible before!
This is the reason we have begun to focus on Innovation to unlock capability at both a personal and practice level – it seems to be the “magic key” at the moment!
RE: conference theme: We’ve done scores of workshops on resilient design within firms from both the technical and “how to talk to/convince clients to do resilient design” and over the last 18 months, have revised to do the same workshops thru this lens and you can see and feel the difference in how people engage with the topic.
One thing that is surprising is the gap between how we perceive ourselves to be (creative thinkers, innovators, using ‘design thinking’) and the reality – which can be assessed through fun ‘tests’. Once people realize that and understand what it really is to be an innovator – they get excited about stretching an untapped (or under tapped) part of their brains!
