Michele Andaloro is a Building Engineer from Politecnico di Milano, working as an Associate at Werner Sobek in New York.
After graduating with a thesis on algorithmic design and robotic fabrication—developed at Indexlab in the framework of the "Digital Takes Command" exhibition by Triennale di Milano—he joined Werner Sobek in New York, where he focuses on design, engineering, and sustainability.
As an Associate, he is responsible for managing and leading the design of complex projects internationally; his portfolio includes academic and cultural buildings for major institutions—such as Harvard, ITT, FIT, and the Smithsonian—art installations and a wide range of public and private projects across different scales and programs.
He has been a lecturer, guest critic, and tutor in numerous universities, including Politecnico di Milano, The Cooper Union, The University of Pennsylvania, Pratt Institute, and Rice University.
Proposed Session Description
Facades play a relevant role in the search for a more sustainable approach to contemporary architecture.
The amount of embodied and operational energy can be optimized substantially if certain measures are adopted and the potential of digital tools is fully exploited.
This session focuses on novel approaches—three detailed case studies will be presented—to the design of contemporary facades rooted in integrated design, interdisciplinarity and sustainability.
Why is this session important?
Sustainable engineering and design are essential for the future of our planet.
Man-made climate change, the continuing growth of the world’s population and the increasing consumption of natural resources are global challenges that affect us all.
The building industry has a special role to play in tackling the problems ahead, as it is responsible for a large proportion of all emissions and resource consumption worldwide.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Werner Sobek New York is a certified WBE (Women Business Enterprise) in the City of New York.
Learning Objectives
distill the design process of complex facade projects to make the case for integration and multidisciplinarity
examine in detail technological and comfort aspects related to building facades
demonstrate through the analysis of realized projects how a building can positively respond to its environment and create an habitat
demonstrate how sustainable design measures can be seamlessly integrated in the design of building facades from the very beginning for more meaning and functional results
